Design Intent

An eleven-key boutique property in a restored Portuguese-era villa, designed to feel like a well-kept private house rather than a hotel.

The brief asked for a property with no lobby, no reception desk and no corridors — guests are met at the door and taken to their room. That single decision reorganised the entire plan around a sequence of courtyards instead of circulation.

The original villa provided six rooms. Five more sit in a new laterite wing set behind the garden wall, low enough that the villa remains the only thing visible from the lane.

Every room is different. Shared elements — the beds, the bathroom fittings, the linen — are consistent, but no two rooms share a plan, a palette or a view. Operationally harder; considerably more memorable.

Materials & Palette

What the house isactually made of.

Laterite block

Exposed, locally quarried, new wing

Oxide flooring

Hand-poured, five colourways

Azulejo tile

Restored originals, retained in situ

Rattan and cane

Locally woven furniture and screens

01

No reception

Guests are met at the door and walked to their room. The plan is organised around courtyards, not corridors.

02

Eleven distinct rooms

No two keys share a plan, palette or outlook — consistent in quality, deliberately inconsistent in character.

03

Invisible from the lane

The new five-key wing sits below the garden wall line, so the restored villa remains the only visible built form.

They designed something our guests remember and our team can actually run. In hospitality, getting both is rarer than it should be.
